Jacques, Mary, Geoff, Constance, William and Gertrude...

( I created these collage grids using BeFunky )
I love roses. When I was little, I remember there was a lovely 'Albertine' rose in the garden.  That love has stayed with me and over the years, I have amassed a collection in my small back garden.  Some have come and gone, but others have stayed. Some are in the border, but most are in large pots.  With the uncharacteristically hot May weather we have been having in the UK over the last week, they have rushed to bloom. (While they may enjoy the sun and heat, I am struggling!)
Above, top line, left to right: Jacques Cartier; Mary Rose; Eyes for You.
Middle line, left to right: Cottage Rose; Olivia Rose Austin; Dannahue.
Bottom line, left to right: Geoff Hamilton; For Your Eye Only; Constance Spry.
Above, top left, going clockwise: William Shakespeare 2000; Gertrude Jekyll; Roald Dahl; Susan Williams-Ellis (the white one, bottom left corner) and Desdemona (my newest purchase, earlier this year.)

They are doing well and I am enjoying their perfumes.  This isn't the whole collection, as there are a few more yet to flower (Bring Me Sunshine; Ferdinand Pichard; Emily Bronte; Blush Noisette and New Dawn), so hopefully there will be more for us to enjoy.

  1. I'm not a big fan of roses, hubby loves them, so we do have 3 bush and 2 climbers, they are pretty this time of year. Yours are so colourful.

    1. Thanks, Poppypatchwork. The roses I have should give us flowers over the summer (except for Constance Spry who flowers once a year). Initially, I had mainly pink roses, but I have tried to add a few more colours into the mix over the years. I have now run out of room!

  2. Your roses look just gorgeous Ellie - love the collages. These would be great made up into gift cards, print off the images onto photo paper. Just a thought. I have a couple of the same roses but mine are all going to sleep for the winter at the moment, I am hoping to get some hips when I prune in July. Have a lovely weekend Ellie. xx

    1. Thanks, Julie. I've done these rose collages for a few years now and the roses do look good like that. That's a good idea about the gift cards.
      Have a lovely weekend too.

  3. Beautiful. I was never a great lover of roses until recent years. You have such a fantastic collection, I wonder if you have a favourite and what you look for when you're adding to your wonderful collection.

    1. Thanks, Jo. Oh, now that's tricky, but if pressed, I would say my favourite has to be Gertrude Jekyll as she has the best scent. She's a good grower and healthy too. I also like the persica roses - 'Eyes for you' and 'For your eyes only' with their darker colour in the centre of the flowers. I think Emily Bronte is really pretty with the pink and apricot flowers. William Shakespeare 2000 is very healthy too and Desdemona is a lovely pale light pink which fades to white and cream. She is doing well considering she was only planted earlier this year. Dannahue is also a good rose and is coping in a north facing spot. (As you can tell, it's difficult to choose just one favourite!) It depends what you are looking for as there are so many types of roses. Mine are mainly David Austin repeat flowering ones. I usually look for the size and whether the rose is good in a pot. I also need a perfume. Then it's down to colour. As I have so many pink roses, I have been trying to choose other colours. The David Austin website is really helpful when you are trying to choose.
Sorry, that was a bit of an essay!
