In the Garden

I have finally been able to get into the garden and finish planting my tulips this afternoon.  They are all in pots, except Little Beauty, which I have popped into a border.  All the tulip photos below are from Peter Nyssen's website, which is where my tulips came from this year (the first time they have been sent in proper paper bags!)
 Above is Carnival de Nice.
Here is Black Parrot (and the bulbs in the first photo are this variety).
This is Little Beauty, which was sent to me in my Cosy Autumn Swap.
 Triumph Double mixed.
Ballerina, which is supposed to have a lovely fragrance.
Finally, Blue Parrot, another gift from the Autumn swap.  I think the garden will be a riot of colour next Spring and I am really looking forward to seeing it in all its glory.

In the garden now, just a few colours remain.  Above is the blueberry bush about three weeks ago - with fiery red and orange leaf colours.
Here it is this afternoon, with just a few leaves remaining and if you touch the stem, the leaves gently fall off.
I still have some roses flowering, despite the rain and cold.  This one is New Dawn and looks beautiful with the raindrops still glistening.
I have also started the annual wrapping of pots with bubble wrap, because it won't be long before the frosts start in earnest.  Every year I say 'I'm going to get rid of some pots', but somehow, during the Spring and Summer, I seem to end up with several more.  The bubble wrap may not look very elegant but it does give the plants some insulation and protection.  I still have about fifteen  more to do, so I had better get on with it!

  1. Cant wait to see all your tulips in flower in the spring. We have just had our first frost this morning, so I must start bubble-wrapping, although luckily most of my pots are now inside the conservatory, only about 4 outside. Also have a couple of roses still flowering.

    1. Dear Joy
Thank you for your comment. I am very excited about seeing all those luscious colours in the Spring. It seems a long time away at the moment though. Hopefully I'll finish my bubble wrapping by next weekend.
      Enjoy your roses too!

I really should proof read my replies! I meant 'your', not 'yur'.

  3. Such a gorgeous array of tulips! I just planted mine but they were just from the garden centre. No idea what kind! But I do love tulips, they are my favourite flower by a mile and I buy bunches and bunches of them every spring. I bet your garden will look a picture when these start to come up. x

Thank you for commenting. I had a rather disappointing selection this year, where they weren't what they said they should be, so I am hoping these will be better next year. I have only recently started planting tulips in the last two years, and this year I have about 110 bulbs! I hope they will all do well. I shall put photos of them on my blog next year, whatever happens.
      Enjoy yours next Spring too.

  4. I never seem to be able to grow Tulips, however much I love them. I think that the slugs eat them before they have a chance to grow.

I have Wallflowers and Borage in bloom at the moment - very much the wrong end of the year!

    1. Dear Toffeeapple
Thank you for commenting. My tulips in pots have a thin layer of gravel over them and the last two years they have been fine, even though my garden boasts a fairly large slug, snail and vine weevil population (ugh!). I'll have to see whether these new tulips survive the onslaught. Perhaps the really cold weather we had over the last two years has some benefits by killing off some of the little blighters. If so, then I'll cope with the cold weather (although not for months at a time, please).
Wallflowers and borage in flower? I think plants are a little mixed up again.

Thank you. I am hoping it will be just that. I have surprised myself with the colours I have chosen because usually I choose pastels - roses, clematis, perennials. Perhaps it is because after the dullness of winter, vibrant colours are needed?

  6. Well done you on planting all the bulbs.

I popped a few into pots so fingers crossed.

    I love your leaf photo
and also the pale pink roses - gorgeous.

    Lots of rain here too!

    Hope all well.

Thank you. All is well, very wet, but not flooded as with other areas, so we are thankful for that. I hope my tulips will do well as their splash of colour will be very welcome next Spring. Rose New Dawn has been lovely this year and is still producing buds.
I hope all is well with you too.
