Open Gardens visit

Yesterday we spent a very nice afternoon in a village a few miles away which was having an open gardens afternoon.  The gardens varied in size and style, but all were very well maintained and, considering the cold Spring we have had, were all full of flowers.  Some were a little too regimented for my liking, but I admired the owners' skill.
Irises were much in evidence, as were alliums, aquilegias and weigelas.
This was the last garden we visited and had lots of exuberant planting.
As we were having a lovely cup of tea and piece of cake, we were treated to a flypast from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Lancaster.  It came over three times, but, unfortunately, these were the only photos I managed to get.
I think seeing this aeroplane may have been a highlight of the afternoon for many people!

  1. That Lancaster gets about all over this country - went over my head last year, it looked so pretty.

Those Irises are lovely, mine are all the same sade of light lavender but they smell heavenly and there are so many of them this year.

    1. Dear Toffeeapple
Thank you. The irises were looking absolutely beautiful and could be seen in all the gardens. I really like them but can't seem to grow them successfully, so have to be content with admiring them from afar. It does seem to have been a good year for irises and alliums.

  2. Hi Ellie, I was invited along to some open gardens yesterday but as we are up to our eyes in decorating I declined!! It is one of my favourite things to do.

Thank you. Me too - I love looking at other people's gardens, even if once I get home, mine is looking less than lovely in comparison. One day, I shall have a garden good enough to open for charity (well, that's the plan!)
      Hope your decorating went well.

  3. What a lovely way to spend an afternoon and to see a Lancaster in flight too - fab! When H was small we used to go every single holiday and half term to the RAF Museum at Hendon and stand admiringly underneath the Lancaster there - so impressive close up - it and the Vulcan were the high spot of every visit! Thank you. The Lancaster was rather impressive, especially as it went over three times. Chris was delighted to see it! It is lovely to have the opportunity to see these amazing planes, whether flying or not - they represent so much to so many people.

  4. I loved your last post Ellie, and here are more fabulous flowers again ... stepping into your blog is often like stepping into a garden!

It is wonderful to see the old war planes isn't it :)

    1. Dear Annie
Thank you. I do enjoy gardening (which may be just a little bit obvious) and just can't help but be thrilled when something flowers - I have to share my delight! One day I will have a bigger garden, I hope and can then indulge myself with lots more plants. Until then, I shall keep cramming more things into my small garden.
The plane was a huge treat for us all and actually got a cheer the first time it went over!
      Best wishes
