Progress with the patchwork

I have made progress with my first ever patchwork quilt.  I have completed the top and will now need to create the quilt sandwich with wadding and backing fabric, before quilting the layers together.  I do like the material, which has been the saving grace for this project.  I still do not like using a rotary cutter (however, I did find that if I slowed down and took my time, I did get marginally better results).  In the end, I cut card templates for the squares and rotary cut around them, but they were still far from perfect.
I have decided that I am not going to worry about whether the seams line up (they don't) and am just going to celebrate the fact that I have made this!
I am looking forward to cutting the binding strips but this is because I have an Accuquilt Go Baby fabric die cutting machine which will ensure perfect strips every time.  I may make another quilt, but just using the strips...

  1. When I was still playing with patchwork I cannot count the number of times I undid seams to try and get the perfect match. Curved seams were the worst. By a long way. And not fun to cut either.
    Love your colourful quilt.

    1. Thanks, EC. I did undo a few seams in an attempt to line them up. The sewing was the easier bit on the whole, although I now have the wrestle with wadding/batting and backing. The sitting room floor may need to be used again!

  2. LOVE the colors! Congrats to you indeed on your first quilt. It shouldn't be perfect...after all, the history of quilts was left over fabric right, so things weren't really professionally cut and in many cases not even measured. Had an older woman once tell me she had been in many a quilting bee ...back in the day, and many times things were torn if they didn't scissors on hand, so I'm sure yours cut with templates etc are wonderful. Is this to be a gift, or did you make it for yourself?

    1. Thanks, Sandy. It was the material which inspired me to have a go at the quilt as I wasn't sure what else I would use it for. This is for me to use as a lap quilt, so the lack of perfection isn't such an issue. I don't think I'll be making patchwork quilts for gifts anytime soon!
