Wanderlust 2021 - weeks thirty-three to thirty-six - Rainbows

The theme for these weeks was 'Rainbows'.  For week thirty-three, we chose a landscape photo that meant something to us and then looked at David Hockney's landscapes, noting his mark making and use of colour.  We then created our photo in that style, using contrasting and complementary colours.  My photo was one I took in the Lincolnshire Wolds.
Week thirty-four was more rainbow colour-inspired and was about colour and texture.  I used watercolour sparkle inks and had fun letting the inks drip down the page.
Week thirty-five was an abstract flower painting, using a 'mother colour'.  This was a new concept to me, where you choose one colour to be the mother colour and then add a tiny bit of that colour to all the other colours you use, to create a harmonious colour palette.  My mother colour was that lovely teal blue/green.
Week thirty-six involved going for a walk or into the garden and seeing what flowers there were.  I picked these two little posies from the garden for my page.
Lots of pink and purple, but a punch of orange and yellow too.  We then made a colour swatch of the colours we could see and made some ink and pencil sketches of parts of the flowers.
I really enjoyed this and spent a very happy couple of hours yesterday.

The next theme is 'Haven'.  I have already signed up for Wanderlust 2022 as I have really enjoyed this year's course and can honestly say it is one of the best things I have bought.  The course has a different structure next year, with the themes being over seven weeks and focusing on specific materials.  I am really looking forward to it but am pleased to say there are still more lessons to enjoy in this year's course.

    1. Thanks, Lulu. The Rainbow theme was a really fun and interesting one and I have learnt a lot. I shall be exploring the 'mother colour' concept again, I think!
      Have a lovely week too.

  2. You had me at rainbows and gardens (which are definitely a haven for me).
Mother colour was a new concept for me - but I loved learning about it and enjoyed your use of it.
I am, just as you are, looking forward to Wanderlust 2020.

    1. Thanks, EC. I thoroughly enjoyed this theme and learnt a lot. 'Mother colour' was a new one for me too and it was interesting to see how the colours changed with the addition of the teal blue/green I used. In this case, they became slightly more muted, but I think the whole piece was effective colour-wise.
I am really looking forward to next year's course, as well as enjoying the remainder of this year. The course has been a great investment in my crafting!

  3. Love your Rainbow of Chaos - I think that sums up my life quite succinctly 🤗💚

    1. Thanks, Jayne. It seemed to sum up how the world appears to be at the moment - it is still beautiful with a myriad of rainbow colours but we are creating chaos.
I really enjoyed creating this piece though and using embossing powder on top of texture paste then heating it, was a technique I had seen but hadn't used before.
      Have a good week.

  4. Wonderful, Ellie! These pictures are gorgeous and I admire you for sticking with the Wanderlust schedule. Me? I didn't do ONE project from it... second year in a row, to boot. :-/ ~Andrea xoxoxo

    1. Thanks, Andrea. Well, never say never - I think you have lifetime access to the courses, so you may get round to doing some of the lessons at some time. I look forward to the lessons on a Friday and then usually do them over the weekend. However, I don't have children or grandchildren, so I probably have more time for myself than you do!
I look forward to seeing some of your Wanderlust work one day!

  5. Fascinating...this course does seem to be waking up your creativity. Splendid display of colours. I wonder if it is teaching you to appreciate the wonderful colours in your garden more or would it be the other way around. Perhaps thanks to your garden you are able to create these combination of colours. Just a thought :-) Enjoy! Amanda x

    1. Thanks, Amanda. I think I have always enjoyed the colours in my garden and appreciated other people's gardens too, but with lockdowns and being lucky enough to be able to escape into my garden, I think I perhaps look more closely. The course has certainly encouraged that and quite often, the garden, plants or nature have provided some kind of inspiration for me.

  6. There's no doubt that the first week is inspired by David Hockney. I think my favourite is the second one. It's such a great course for getting the creative juices flowing, you really do have to think outside the box sometimes.

    1. Thanks, Jo. I really enjoyed making the second one - letting the paint drip and mingle and seeing what happened. I also really enjoy using texture paste too. Yes, the course has certainly offered me lots of creative challenges - and is continuing to do so!
