Poppies and Peonies

Although the poppies and peonies in the garden are now just a memory, I did remember to take a few photos.  I don't think they particularly enjoyed the rain we had in June, but I did manage to get some images before they were too battered.  Above is a pink poppy which I can't remember the name of - I will check to see if I wrote it down.
I don't remember seeing the red blotches at the base of the petals on this white poppy (Checkers) before - I thought they were black.
I need to pot this peony on as it is in a small pot.  It was beautiful.
This white peony took a while to get going but gave me a lot of pleasure once it did.  The blush pink and white petals give it a delicate look, even though it is a very blowsy flower.  This one is in the border next to an allium and miscanthus and seems to be liking it.
Poppies and peonies are the divas of the garden as they don't stay around for long, but there's nothing to compare with them when they are centre stage.

  1. Love your poppies and peonies and continue to mourn that I can only grow the first.

    1. Thanks, EC. I am pleased to be able to grow the ones I do, but in an dream garden, I would have lots! Is it too hot for them where you are or are they not available?

    2. They are available. I just don't seem to be able to get them to bloom.

    3. From what I have learned about them, they need a rich soil and don't like to dry out, but the most important thing is not to plant them too deeply otherwise they don't flower- the top should be no more than 1 inch (2.5 cm) below the soil surface.

  2. I have a Sarah Bernhardt peony which does well, the only poppies I seem to be able to grow are the Welsh poppies (yellow). Yours are lovely.

    1. Thanks, Pat. I used to have a Sarah Bernhardt peony too but it wasn't happy where I planted it and outgrew its space quite quickly. I have had more success with the patio peonies. The Oriental poppies seem to be OK, but I don't have much luck with the annual ones. I keep trying though...

    1. Thanks, Chrissie. They are fleeting beauties, but it does make me appreciate them when they are in flower.

  4. Beautiful, but right you are the rains in June were very hard on flowers, beat many right to the ground and drowned others.

    1. Thanks, Sandy. It's always depressing when that happens, so I'm pleased when I manage to grab a photo or two before that!

  5. You do grow some beautiful blooms Ellie.
Our peonies also went over very quickly, but I did manage a few poppy photos which I must do something with . . .

    1. Thanks, Jayne. I have managed to squeeze a lot of plants into my little garden. They bring me a lot of joy (together with the occasional frustration) and I wouldn't want to be without a garden of some kind. It would be lovely to see your poppies too!
