We had a very nice morning on Sunday, wandering around the town and looking in charity shops to see what we could find. We actually went for the amethyst chip necklace above, which Chris had seen on Saturday but hadn't bought as he wasn't sure whether I needed it. (Of course I needed it!). When we got there, the shop was closed, but as luck would have it, the lady was just opening it so I was able to buy the necklace. I will be re-purposing it to make memory wire amethyst bracelets and possibly a necklace.
The chips have a lovely range of colours so colour grading them will keep me very occupied.
Having made it to Steep Hill, we stopped at Bunty's Tea Rooms (photo above from their Facebook page), run by a very nice chap Chris knows and a lovely place for tea and cake if you are ever passing. There is vintage china with proper tea cups and the whole place has a vintage look and is very welcoming. We were going to have egg mayonnaise sandwiches but I remembered we had some nice bread at home so we settled for tea and cake. Chris had dandelion and burdock cake which had violet icing and I chose chocolate. Judging by the speed with which the cakes disappeared, I would say they were a good choice! We set off home suitably replenished and went into pretty much every charity shop we could find. here's what we came home with. Loads of wooden beads and shell beads all just waiting to be made into something interesting. Chris has a few ideas in mind...
Here is my egg and cress sandwich - one of my all time favourite sandwich fillings - and it was delicious!
Sounds like my kind of day, a rummage around the charity shops topped off with cake. lol
ReplyDeleteThe dandelion and Burdock cake sounds interesting it reminded me of when we were kids and took a bottle to the park, (glass of course, no health and safety then)
Did you taste the cake, what was it like?
The Amythest necklace is just beautiful.

Thanks, Briony. It was a very enjoyable day. I didn't taste the cake, but Chris said it was delicious and it did disappear pretty quickly!
DeleteThe amethysts are lovely, but I know I wouldn't wear the necklace as it is, so I am looking forward to wearing the pieces I make with the stones(when I get some time to do that amongst all the other WIPs I have and the extra ideas going round in my brain!).
Best wishes

Hello again, Briony. I have just checked with Chris who said that the cake had a slight taste of dandelion and burdock but that he wouldn't have necessarily been able to identify it as such if he hadn't known. There was also chocolate in there, so perhaps that was a little overpowering. I have tried an Earl Grey and lemon cake there and that was delicious, with a definite Earl Grey taste. I like the way they try unusual flavours at Bunty's!

I like your style Ellie! CS browsing and coffee and cakes, need I say more! We had a slice of liquorice cake on saturday afternoon at a little tea shop in Denby Dale and it was one of my favourite ever cakes that I have tasted!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Anne. It was a very nice way to spend a few hours. Tea and cake has to be one of the greatest things ever invented! Liquorice cake sounds interesting but I think I'll stick to good old chocolate cake.

I hadn't realised you were in Lincoln! I went to uni there, and didn't move away until I was married with two kids.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see what you do with all those beads!
Thanks, Annie. To use a rather hackneyed (but appropriate phrase)- it's a small world! Lincoln, like many cities, has some lovely areas and some less lovely ones, but the Cathedral and castle are definitely jewels in its crown.
DeleteI think the bead projects may be long term ones, but I'll post about them when we do make them into something...

Hi Ellie
ReplyDeleteI've only just started blogging and found your a lovely post through Joy's. I adore browsing charity and second hand shops for vintage finds and coffee and cake is an absolute must on such occasions! You have some gorgeous beads and jewellery ideas. Have a lovely weekend, Alison xx
Thanks, Alison. Hello and welcome to my blog. I hope you enjoy reading it. I must admit that I am becoming just a little bit obsessed with beads and jewellery - my husband would say I am a lost cause!
DeleteI hope you have great weekend too.
Best wishes
