With the heatwaves we keep having (in the UK - these temperatures are 'hot' for us, but 'pleasant' for many other people), I have noticed many more butterflies this year, so that is one positive.
I do not do well in the heat, so this summer is a struggle for me. I realise I am a lot more fortunate than many people, and indeed, the UK is not experiencing the horribly high temperatures that Europe is under at the moment. A mix of the unpredictability of the menopause and warm temperatures at night mean I am not at my best.
However, back to the butterflies. I have seen the ubiquitous cabbage white butterfly, which seems to cope in any weather, and more Peacock butterflies and Red Admirals (like the one in the photo, enjoying the buddleia). I have also seen a little brown butterfly, but it flew off too quickly for me to identify it or to get a photo.
I am looking forward to the cooler days of Autumn - it's not good to wish the time away though!

I was thinking *exactly* this, Ellie..."it's not good to wish the time away". We've had a very hot summer here in northernmost Indiana too and I am longing for autumn. But then I think "Wait a minute, do I really want to wish my life away like that?" It's hard not to wish for autumn though, when I feel almost like I'm a prisoner in my own home. It's too hot to do anything outside except fill my wildlife's water bowls & put food out for them. Keep cool. Love, Andrea xoxo
ReplyDeleteThanks, Andrea. I am not a fan of the higher temperatures at all. When I say 'High', I mean for the UK - to be honest anything over 23 degrees C is too hot for me, but we have been having 28 - 30 degrees C and upwards, so I am struggling, as I said. No air conditioning! I am watering in the evenings, when it is cooler and more pleasant. While I don't want to wish my life away, I do wish the temperatures were lower. I think I am going to have to get used to it though, due to climate change.

I always think we should try to embrace each season & value it on its own merits but - like you Ellie - I do not enjoy the heat. It is wilting & makes you feel unmotivated to work in it. That is good that the butterflies are coming, probably not especially the white butterfly which is such a pest. xx
ReplyDeleteThanks, Julie. Yes indeed, the heat just wipes me out, so I am lucky I don't live anywhere hotter! I have enjoyed seeing more butterflies and my blueberries are fruiting really well, so there are some positives!
