When one door closes...

When we moved in, over thirty years ago, we had all new windows and doors, as you do.  They have done pretty well, but we knew the back door was on the way out, although we kept putting off doing anything about it.  It decided to lock shut one day and that was that.  We had to have a new door.  We got a man in to fit the door and that went well, although he said our previous door had been fitted too far in, so he would rectify that, which he did.
Chris said he would finish off around the door, so he got the various bits and pieces needed and set to (after having a few issues because the framing pieces had been curved to fit in the car and then wouldn't straighten out!).  However, Chris persevered and has finished the framing, which looks great.  (The photos aren't the best, thanks to the miserable grey rainy day and lack of light!).
We also got another cat flap fitted, which looked good, but we have since discovered doesn't have a very strong magnetic fastening, so when there is any sort of breeze, it flaps open, letting draughts in!  Another one with a better magnetic catch may be in order...

The door is lovely - and Chris did a great job with the framing!

  1. Those doors and windows have served you well. Well done to Chris for finishing off. Our house is about thirteen years old, we've lived here just under four years and our windows are so draughty, we know we'll have to get them replaced at some point.

    1. Thanks, Jo. We have a long list of other jobs which need doing, but having a Victorian terrace house, that's to be expected. We do like the nice square rooms and the higher ceilings. We also need to have a huge de-clutter!

  2. Our cat flap wafts when the east wind blows (sounds like a code from the cold war!) and to make things worse, it has a bit of a squeak which we have never been able to cure! At least we know when the cat is in - she is a bit too fat to sneak in or out without the flap letting us know.

    1. Thanks, kjsutcliffe. That does indeed sound like a code! We are thinking about what we could do with the cat flap, but may need to buy another one...

    1. Thanks, Amalia. Every time I open or close this door, I realise just how bad the old one was! The cat is not impressed with the flap and we usually have to open it for him. Oh well...

  4. We need this door for the neighbour cat ... but he comes through the kitchen window too. 😉

Your door for the cat looks perfect indeed.

    1. Thanks, EricaSta and welcome. The cat flap is not very popular with the cat - he doesn't like going out of it but seems to manage coming in OK. Cats do seem to find plenty of nice places to go that are not their own home!

  5. Out with the old and in with the new. Doors are next on our list of things to do. We probably should have done it when we had the windows replaced a few years back; but didn't. The door looks good, and it's great your hubby is handy like that to do the finishing work. Sounds like you might have unexpected guests with that cat door. Hope you get that fixed soon.

    1. Thanks, Sandy. We need to replace some of the windows too, but that can wait as we have other more pressing things on the list (as always in an old house). So far we haven't had any other cat visitors, so hopefully that won't be a problem

  6. The door is really nice, Ellie. Weren't you dying to do something artsy-fartsy with it, tho? I know my mind gravitates towards "How can I make this one-of-a-kind?" whenever we have a home improvement job going. *ha-ha* Love, Andrea xoxo

    1. Thanks, Andrea. It would be nice, but we have done that with the rest of the house - colours, objects, furnishings, fixtures, etc., so it might have been a bit much to have don the doors and windows as well!
