Now the weather is cooler and we have had a bit of much needed rain, some of my normally very reliable autumn flowers are putting in an appearance and bringing me some lovely splashes of colour. Above is Japanese Anemone Bressingham Glow. It is much shorter and much later to flower this year.
Here is Symphyotrichum (Aster, as it will always be to me!)) novae-angliae Mrs S T Wright. This one has seeded itself from the main plant which is further down the border.
Here is Symphyotrichum (Aster) Little Carlow. For the last two years this plant's leaves have struggled against mildew, as it is near to a big Buddleia. I may need to move it (again) or improve the soil. The flowers are very pretty though.
Helianthus Lemon Queen, again, this is shorter and smaller than usual, but still has zingy yellow flowers, loved by bees.
Even the miscanthus is shorter, but still elegant, particularly when the breeze ruffles its silky flowers.
Liriope Muscari, a very undemanding plant. The stem in front is a herbaceous Clematis, New Love.
The hydrangeas are taking on their autumn colours of old velvet.
Salvias are still flowering - this one is either Raspberry Melba or Strawberry Melba!
This little clematis 'Neptune' is flowering for the second time this year which is unexpected, but very welcome. these are the flowers at the top...
...and the bottom of the support. I am enjoying this gentle slide into Autumn very much.

Lots of beautiful colour in your garden.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Poppypatchwork. I like lots of colour and although I have only a small garden, there is a lot packed in (my husband thinks there is too much!).

I have a small garden as well and pack them in, Marlene x
DeleteA lovely Sunday post, I enjoyed seeing your beautiful flowers.
ReplyDeleteHave a good new week.
All the best Jan
Thanks, Jan. My little garden gives me a lot of joy and helps me to keep connected with nature. I love to see the flowers blooming in their different seasons.

My autumnal garden is as it is at this time of year - no flowers and mounds of dying back herbaceous greenery. I can never keep seed heads over winter - they just rot. So, when I can muster myself, I will be doing a cut back before it all turns to mush 😝 Combination of northern dampness and very tree-ed neighbours shading my garden some what!
ReplyDeleteYours on the other hand has so many lovely pops of colour - I shall enjoy them instead x
Thanks, kjsutcliffe. I keep the seedheads I can although I can never manage to keep alliums! I do enjoy the different colours, even after the blazing hot summer we've just had, the garden is still giving me so much to enjoy. There will be more to come with the likes of the blueberry leaves and ginkgo leaves.

I am always fascinated that your clematis & your Japanese Anemone flower in the autumn Ellie ... as they only flower here in the spring. My clematis is in full bloom but will finish soon & then in autumn will lose its leaves. Gosh those hydrangea colours always make me swoon. xx
ReplyDeleteThanks, Julie. Sometimes clematis here can have a second flowering, so that is always an added joy when it happens. Japanese anemones are always late summer/autumn flowerers here. The hydrangeas have struggled in the heat this year, but have still flowered and they have taken on their autumn colours a bit earlier than in other years.

It's nice to see you still have so much colour in your garden. I think my favourite is the Helianthus, I love yellow flowers. I don't think you can beat a hydrangea though, beautiful even as the flowers fade. I'm a bit late in potting up an autumn display this year, I've still got summer bedding in some of my pots and they're still going strong.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jo. I like the Helianthus too - such a happy flower and loved by the bees. It can become a bit of a thug but here it doesn't seem to be. It's very undemanding and I would like a bit more of it so I may try to divide it in Spring perhaps. Hydrangeas haven't enjoyed the summer, but most of mine are in pots so did get watered regularly. My cosmos is still doing well too.

How lovely! My garden is also coming to life with the cooler temperatures and early rain. The bright colors of the flowers are all the more beautiful on cloudy days.
