Feeling a bit sad...

I was going to write a blog post about a lovely visit to Grimsthorpe Castle earlier this week and I shall still do that, just not tonight.
I was watering the pots in the garden and went to the front of the house to water the hanging basket, only to find that the gate was open and the hanging basket was gone.  In twenty-two years of living here, I have not had any problems like this and have always enjoyed seeing the hanging basket brightening up the front of the house.  It was there when we came back from work and shopping, so the person stole it while we were at home, which somehow makes it worse.  The hanging basket was only a plastic one, just had petunias in it and in the great scheme of things, it doesn't really matter, but the fact that someone would steal it has upset me.
I don't put any plants out at the front of the house that are expensive, or really special, but I was naive enough to think that they would be enjoyed by people, without being stolen.
So, I have two choices.  I can either not have a basket out there again and deprive myself of the pleasure, or I can take a deep breath and find a basket or trough which can be fixed to the wall and then plant that up.  I think I know which I shall be doing!
I hope that my next post will be on a more positive note.

  2. It's really sad thing, but it's possible. You had better fix it, I think.

    1. Thanks, Poirot. Unfortunately, some people are not very nice and will take things that do not belong to them. However, I shall replace the basket, probably with a trough, hopefully over this weekend.

  3. That' s upsetting! Who can be so very much in need of a hanging basket anyway???
Don't let it spoil your joy Ellie... Maybe another hanging basket tied with some rope or something?
    Lots of love from Mirjam.

    1. Thanks, Mirjam. I am going to have a container which can be screwed to the wall this time. They would need a drill/screwdriver to remove it and we would definitely hear them!! I was upset, but I won't let them spoil my joy - a replacement is on the way!

    1. Thanks, Marlene. I hope they manage to look after it properly too although I added plenty of food and water saving granules when I planted it up. I have bought a metal half basket and some more plants, so that will be attached to the wall next week to replace the missing basket.

  5. Isn't it sad when this kind of thing happens? I do despair sometimes with people and the way the world is going in general.
Thanks for the comment on the butterflies, but on thinking about it I havent seen one wasp this year either, what is man doing to our lovely planet?

    1. Thanks, Briony. It is sad, but now I just have to shrug and get going on the replacement. I suppose, on a positive note, it must have looked good, otherwise it would still be there!
I saw a cabbage white butterfly today and there have been some bees on the raspberry flowers, but not as many as in previous years.

  6. How disturbing that you were at home while the thief was at work. But one unpleasant experience in twenty-two years is a good ratio. Fix your metal basket firmly and enjoy some cheap but cheerful new planting to welcome you home each day!

    1. Thanks, Share my Garden. It was a horrible feeling to know that we were there but didn't hear anything. We bought the replacement basket and plants last night and although it may not be as pretty as the first one, I hope it will still bring a splash of colour to the street.

    1. Thanks, Amanda. I am feeling much better now and have given the replacement plants (fuchsia, geranium, petunia amongst others) some tlc while they are waiting to go into their new home. Chris is going to screw the new half basket to the wall with brackets, so hopefully it will be there for many years to come.

  8. It is a horrible invitation of privacy and must leaving you feeling horrible. Shall I tell you a little story about a Shaker community as it was told me: a Shaker community plowed a field, planted seeds, did all the work. When it was time to enjoy the fruit of their labor, it was stolen. They had a meeting and decided that next year they would plow two fields, one for themselves and one of the thieves. It made no sense to me as a solution, obviously the thieves will take both, wouldn't they? But the goodness of it cheered me up :-)

    1. Thanks, Amalia. I love the Shaker story! There is a lot of goodness in the world (especially in Blogland), so we should celebrate that. This won't stop me from trying to make our street a prettier place to be.

    1. Thanks, Butterfly. Some people are just nasty and mean. However, there are so many people who are lovely, as can be seen by all these kind and supportive comments. I bet the person who knitted Fred and Ginger was upset to see that they had gone, although perhaps they knew that they wouldn't be there very long.

  10. So sorry to hear this Ellie, not fair at all. I had a Christmas wreath that I had made stolen a few years ago and that made me sad too, but I still hang things on my door, you have to keep going. I hope that the rest of your flowers are still looking beautiful. xx

    1. Thanks, Amy. I don't know why people have to do this - some people are just mean like that. I agree, you do have to keep going and I am definitely doing that. Once the wire wall basket is secured, I shall enjoy planting it up even though it will look very different from the original one.

    1. Thanks, Toffeeapple. It wasn't a nice thing to happen at all, but lots of nice things have happened since then which have cheered me up. I have just potted up the replacement (which looks pretty dreadful at the moment), but I hope the plants will soon fill out.
