Roses and Peonies

 So far, 2018 has been a wonderful year for roses.  Everywhere you look, roses have been blooming brilliantly.  I have been really enjoying mine and above is a collage (created by using picmonkey) showing some of the beautiful flowers.
Left column: top, Darcey Bussell; middle, Jacques Cartier; bottom, Ferdinand Pichard
Middle column: top, Rosa Mundi, bottom, Pride and Prejudice (that was a birthday present this February)
Right column: top, Winchester Cathedral; middle, For Your Eyes Only; bottom, a vase of Gertrude Jekyll, Cottage Rose, Mary Rose and Ferdinand Pichard.
The peonies were a bit slow this year, probably due to the cold snap in February and March, but they were worth waiting for.  They may only flower for a short time but they do provide a 'wow'.  These are patio peonies, Rome, Athens and Madrid (not necessarily in that order!)
Other roses have started to flower too and the clematis are also making their presence felt, so there may well be more photos to come.

    Your roses are spectacular. We don’t have any peonies, perhaps that’s something we should remedy xx

      Thanks, Cheryl. I am loving the scent from the roses this year as well as the flowers. Gardeners' World last night had a feature on peonies which was lovely. If I had a bigger garden, I would have larger ones in the borders, but the patio ones are designed to grow in pots. If they are happy, they could live for decades.

    Love your roses and will happily see many more photos. Love the peonies too. Sadly they are a plant I have not yet succeeded in bringing to flower. More work needed.

      Thanks, EC. I am in the process of re-potting my roses into deeper pots as the ones I have already done are doing so much better. I hope to get that finished by the end of July. The patio peonies seem to be happy enough in their pots but I have planted one in the border so it will be interesting to see how they compare as time goes on. May and June are my favourite months of the year so I am trying to savour each day.

    So pretty. The peonies haven't been good around here either. They often don't last long. I've seen lots of buds, but many never opened. I wonder if it's been too wet for them.

      Thanks, Sandy. They are a little bit fussy - the weather has to be right for them, doesn't it? They don't like too much rain when they are flowering as the petals go all mushy. At least there are lots of other lovely flowers to enjoy as well.
