Rainbows and plants

Last week, during one of the many rain showers we had, there was this beautiful double rainbow.
It was there for about half an hour and these were the best photos I could get.  I think it's always magical to see a rainbow.
The plants have loved the recent rain, except when it gets too heavy and batters them too much.  This little geranium sanguineum striatum is shyly starting to flower.
The astrantia above was bought at one of the only three RHS Chatsworth shows there were.  Sadly, the RHS have decided not to hold the show there any more, but to focus on the bigger and more well attended shows.  RHS Chatsworth had only just got going really, but there we are.
I think this one may be 'Star of Love'.
Galium odoratum (woodruff) seems to be making itself at home at the back of the border and is giving a froth of little white flowers.
Geranium Phaeum is always reliable and is loved by the bees.  The alliums and roses will be next to flower.

  1. Isn't it funny how the plants much prefer the rain water to the hose water? We use well water so it's still a "natural" type of thing... water coming up from the ground. But it's not nearly as nourishing as the stuff that falls from the sky. ~Andrea xoxo

    1. Thanks, Andrea. Absolutely - the garden has turned into a bit of a jungle with all the rain we have had in May. the plants have really loved it. We are due a sunny weekend, so I shall be in the garden trying to get the clematis under control.

  2. A double rainbow...how very lucky you are! In fact I was wondering if it meant something to see a double rainbow so I had a little gander on google and found that it is considered to be a symbol of transformation and of good fortune. The first arch represents the material world and the second the spiritual. There is more to it of course but I definitely think rainbows are magic! After all don't they always make us feel good when we see one well two then means extra nice and extra good feelings! Take care Amanda x

    1. Thanks, Amanda. Transformation and good fortune would be very much welcomed! Whatever their meaning, I agree about them being magical. These were particularly beautiful.

  3. It's especially lovely to see a double rainbow, even more so when it hangs around for a while for you to enjoy. I love astrantias yet it's a plant I've never grown, I shall get round to buying one for the garden eventually.

    1. Thanks, Jo. I have a small collection of astrantias, some in the borders, some in pots. I love them - reliable, unfussy and they keep their flowers for a long time.

  4. I started out with a tiny bit of sweet woodruff but am now pulling it out in clumps - beware! I think in the past it was gathered and strewn on floors. The soil in my garden is light and sandy and despite years of adding muck it doesn't retain moisture. My plants loved all the rainfall last month, although I didn't!

    1. Thanks, Share my Garden. I must admit that the woodruff has moved around the border, but so far, I haven't pulled any out. If it starts aiming for world domination, I will be ruthless!
The plants in pots have started to dry out already, despite the rainfall, so I have been watering again...

  5. Surely there must be little pots of gold and Irish leprichauns to wrestle at the bottom of those rainbows! The Astrantia is beautiful. Shame about the Chatsworth show. My dad took me to the Tatton Park one years ago and I've always wanted to visit the Malvern one. Chelsea always looks super crowded to me. Also, I'd want to walk through the gardens and get my nosey snout right in there, so viewing it from afar might be frustrating! Hope you've been enjoying the glorious sun. Lulu x

    1. Thanks, Lulu. It would be nice to find that pot of gold! I have visited Tatton Park Flower Show once and it was lovely though a bit of a drive. Chelsea does seem to be far too crowded whenever you see the TV coverage, though numbers will be more restricted this year I think.
It is nice to see the sun, but it's too hot for me now ! (I know, never happy). Some of my pots are drying out far too fast too..
      Happy gardening!
